does the module by itself generate cv? above and beyond it's mixing / attenuating features?

That's the 9744 CV Source, and yes, it generates a steady voltage as set by a front panel adjustment. This is useful for wide range control of a parameter where it might otherwise be restricted by connecting it to a external control input. Connected to the VCO or VCF frequency control input the knob on the 9744 would work to vary the oscillator or filter. It is also useful for biasing or offsetting other control sent into these or other modules when there are multiple cv inputs available. With a slow cyclic modulation into a VCO control the pitches would vary between two extremes as set by the amplitude of the modulation and the CV source could go to one of the other summing inputs and add (with positive CV) or subtract (with negative CV) a fixed, center or midpoint of this modulation range.
