Thanks toneman. That was my thought exactly- not cutting any traces. What I did end up doing was carefully de-soldering the original 555's and putting in sockets- then bent up the pins on a couple of extra 555's I had and tacked the tinned wires to them. This way it was totally and easily reversible...

I recently completed a FatMan (cool stuff!) and have been interested in making a couple of modifications based on some ideas I found online, especially the ones on Dave Brown's webpage, and in particular the Hard/Soft sync mod. Thank you both. I did actually find an inexpensive 25 note MIDI keyboard on eBay that has the 5 pin DIN output jack, so I can use a simple DIN male to male cable.
